Some mull idea of Sen. Bill Clinton WASHINGTON - If Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the presidency, some top Democrats would like to see her husband, former President Bill Clinton, appointed to serve out Hillary’s unexpired Senate term. “As a senator, he’d be a knockout,” said Harold Ickes, who was once a top White House aide to Bill Clinton and now gives behind-the-scenes advice to Hillary. “He knows issues, he loves public policy and he’s a good politician.” Some Democrats and political analysts say Bill Clinton would thrive in the world’s greatest deliberative body, much like Lyndon Johnson did before he became president. “President Clinton would excel in the Senate,” said Paul Begala, who helped Bill Clinton get elected and served in the White House as a top aide.--more on above link

Excuse me but whoever heard of anyone who has served in, arguably, the most powerful office in the world settling for a, relatively, second rate position like that of Senator? I fully support the notion and tradition that our fore-fathers (George Washington) set before us. That being, once having served in government, especially as president, you go back home and pursue other interests.

While I think New York would be doing a major disservice to itself if they did this, it would not be with out precident. Andrew Johnson served as Senator for Tennesee after his Presidency (granted this was still when the State Leglislature elected their Senator...this is prior to the Seventeenth Amendment), and John Quincy Adams served in the House of Representitives after leaving office. However if New York does deside to do this, and (Lord forbid if it actualy happens) former President Clintion does take office as a New York Senator, atleast we can find solice in that he can not be Senate Pro Temp. SINCE the Senate Pro-Temp is third in line to the Presidency, and with the Twenty-Second Amendment stating that a President can only serve a total of two terms, Clinton could not take the job as Senate Pro-Temp. Since it would mean he would be in the line of sucsession. This also means that he can not be appointed to any Presidental Cabinet.

Is Bill a NY resident? I am glad I moved from New York. I do hear nice things about Hillary though....and that isn't easy to say.

Yes, Bill is a NY resident and has a non-profit organization headquartered in Harlem. Even if he didn't want it or isn't offered he'll have a strong voice in Albany re: Hillary's replacement if she somehow won 1600 Pa. Avenue.

I believe Madline Albright was not born in the US yet was in the line of sucsession, but would be passed over. I believe two of President Bush's cabinet members are in line of sucsession but not ineligible. John

The Next Senator From New York, Bill Clinton? WASHINGTON — If Hillary Clinton is elected president, the next senator from New York could be her husband, Bill Clinton. Supporters are touting that scenario in the event the seat currently held by Mrs. Clinton opens up as she moves to higher office. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, would be tasked with appointing someone to fill the open Senate seat for the remaining two years of Clinton's term. The Washington Examiner reports that the Clintons' allies think that would be an excellent plan even if unlikely. "As a senator, he’d be a knockout,” Harold Ickes, an adviser for Sen. Clinton and a White House aide to the former president, told the newspaper. “He knows issues, he loves public policy and he’s a good politician.” While other names have also been listed as potential successors should Clinton win the presidency — including Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Ickes notes that pressure is on Spitzer to appoint a minority to the post.+++---more on above link +++Hmmm, maybe Rev. Al or Charlie Rangel- go for the laugh or the draft ??? Hmmmm.

P.S.- I don't think this pre-planning or spectulation is wrong because there is a real chance that Hillary could win. As a NYer I have never & will never vote for her and know she can be polarizing i.e. shortly after 9/11 I was in a rally for police & NYFD pay raises when she took the mic. to speak she was loudly booed and my voice was w/ our first responders. Same thing at a big event for 9/11 recognition at Madison Square Garden (that one I wasn't @) where she was again the only public official booed by our 1st responders, their families and NYers in attendance @ that fundraiser. She is either loved or hated and there seems to be no middle. But she's smart (crafty), married to a fundraising machine, has wise advisors and could actually win (God forbid).

I fully support the notion and tradition that our fore-fathers (George Washington) set before us. That being, once having served in government, especially as president, you go back home and pursue other interests. Actually, that's a fairly recent phenominon. Prior to FDR, a number of presidents went on to serve in Congress, state houses (both as executives and legislators), as ambassadors, and one was even Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. That being said, the idea of having both Clintons in high public office at the same time is just scary beyond all reason. It does create some interesting procedural questions, though. I'm originally from NH, and when our (now) senior senator (Judd Gregg) was first elected, he was given "senior senator" status in being considered for commitees because he had been NH's governor... If you get those kind of perks for having been a governor, what would you get for having been President??? And what if they chose him as President of the Senate? Then he'd be in the line of succession, and would be constitutionally banned from taking office in the unlikely event something happened to the 4 people ahead of him.

The 22nd ammendment says that he couldn't be ELECTED twice. He could succeed to it legally.
