Some mull idea of Sen. Bill Clinton

WASHINGTON - If Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the presidency, some top Democrats would like to see her husband, former President Bill Clinton, appointed to serve out Hillary’s unexpired Senate term.

“As a senator, he’d be a knockout,” said Harold Ickes, who was once a top White House aide to Bill Clinton and now gives behind-the-scenes advice to Hillary. “He knows issues, he loves public policy and he’s a good politician.”

Some Democrats and political analysts say Bill Clinton would thrive in the world’s greatest deliberative body, much like Lyndon Johnson did before he became president.

“President Clinton would excel in the Senate,” said Paul Begala, who helped Bill Clinton get elected and served in the White House as a top aide.--more on above link

Excuse me but whoever heard of anyone who has served in, arguably, the most powerful office in the world settling for a, relatively, second rate position like that of Senator?

I fully support the notion and tradition that our fore-fathers (George Washington) set before us. That being, once having served in government, especially as president, you go back home and pursue other interests.

If he's the first tourist in outer space, do we have to bring him back?

I agree!
Then again, Arkanas might not want him back.

While I think New York would be doing a major disservice to itself if they did this, it would not be with out precident. Andrew Johnson served as Senator for Tennesee after his Presidency (granted this was still when the State Leglislature elected their Senator...this is prior to the Seventeenth Amendment), and John Quincy Adams served in the House of Representitives after leaving office. However if New York does deside to do this, and (Lord forbid if it actualy happens) former President Clintion does take office as a New York Senator, atleast we can find solice in that he can not be Senate Pro Temp. SINCE the Senate Pro-Temp is third in line to the Presidency, and with the Twenty-Second Amendment stating that a President can only serve a total of two terms, Clinton could not take the job as Senate Pro-Temp. Since it would mean he would be in the line of sucsession. This also means that he can not be appointed to any Presidental Cabinet.

This can become a reality as Gov. George Pataki is no longer our governor and the liberal Spitzer-Cuomo group have taken over NY's top spots.

They could put in Bill, Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo, Al Franken (has a NY home), Charlie Rangel or whoever Spitzer wants to make a temp.

Is Bill a NY resident?

I am glad I moved from New York.

I do hear nice things about Hillary though....and that isn't easy to say.

Yes, Bill is a NY resident and has a non-profit organization headquartered in Harlem. Even if he didn't want it or isn't offered he'll have a strong voice in Albany re: Hillary's replacement if she somehow won 1600 Pa. Avenue.

People who can't serve have been line of sucsession. I believe Madline Albright was not born in the US yet was in the line of sucsession, but would be passed over. I believe two of President Bush's cabinet members are in line of sucsession but not ineligible.

The Next Senator From New York, Bill Clinton?

WASHINGTON — If Hillary Clinton is elected president, the next senator from New York could be her husband, Bill Clinton.

Supporters are touting that scenario in the event the seat currently held by Mrs. Clinton opens up as she moves to higher office. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, would be tasked with appointing someone to fill the open Senate seat for the remaining two years of Clinton's term.

The Washington Examiner reports that the Clintons' allies think that would be an excellent plan even if unlikely.

"As a senator, he’d be a knockout,” Harold Ickes, an adviser for Sen. Clinton and a White House aide to the former president, told the newspaper. “He knows issues, he loves public policy and he’s a good politician.”

While other names have also been listed as potential successors should Clinton win the presidency — including Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Ickes notes that pressure is on Spitzer to appoint a minority to the post.+++---more on above link

+++Hmmm, maybe Rev. Al or Charlie Rangel- go for the laugh or the draft ??? Hmmmm.

Senator Bill Clinton?

He's been Gov. Bill Clinton and President Bill Clinton. Could he become Sen. Bill Clinton, too?

That's the scenario some Democrats are envisioning if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the presidency in 2008, according to the Washington Examiner.

Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was re-elected to the Senate last fall, meaning her seat would need to be filled for the remainder of her six-year term if she becomes president. New York's governor, Democrat Eliot Spitzer, would have the power to appoint a successor through 2010. Then a special election would be held for the last two years of Hillary Clinton's six-year term.

P.S.- I don't think this pre-planning or spectulation is wrong because there is a real chance that Hillary could win. As a NYer I have never & will never vote for her and know she can be polarizing i.e. shortly after 9/11 I was in a rally for police & NYFD pay raises when she took the mic. to speak she was loudly booed and my voice was w/ our first responders.

Same thing at a big event for 9/11 recognition at Madison Square Garden (that one I wasn't @) where she was again the only public official booed by our 1st responders, their families and NYers in attendance @ that fundraiser.

She is either loved or hated and there seems to be no middle. But she's smart (crafty), married to a fundraising machine, has wise advisors and could actually win (God forbid).

Actually, that's a fairly recent phenominon. Prior to FDR, a number of presidents went on to serve in Congress, state houses (both as executives and legislators), as ambassadors, and one was even Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

That being said, the idea of having both Clintons in high public office at the same time is just scary beyond all reason.

It does create some interesting procedural questions, though. I'm originally from NH, and when our (now) senior senator (Judd Gregg) was first elected, he was given "senior senator" status in being considered for commitees because he had been NH's governor... If you get those kind of perks for having been a governor, what would you get for having been President??? And what if they chose him as President of the Senate? Then he'd be in the line of succession, and would be constitutionally banned from taking office in the unlikely event something happened to the 4 people ahead of him.

I think 1 powerful voice against this would be Mr. hold a press conference every few hours..Chuck Schumer. He's NY's Sr. Senator & would know Bill would be getting mass news time.

Hmmmm, maybe not NY Senator but Ruler Of The World:

Hillary Clinton: Bill Will Run the World

If Hillary Clinton gets elected president, her "first man" may just be running the world.

Hillary gave a clear hint last week at the prospect, comments that confirm a report in R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.’s new book "The Clinton Crack-Up: The Boy President’s Life After the White House" that Clinton has been mulling becoming Secretary-General of the United Nations. [Editor's Note: Get the "Clinton Crack-Up" FREE -- Go Here Now.]

Tyrrell writes that in 2001, Clinton’s "political prospects were nil.” Still, agents assigned to his Secret Service detail would later report that Clinton was talking about getting the job as Secretary-General of the United Nations.”

Critics scoffed at the idea. But don’t laugh too long....more on above link

Hillary: Bill Could Be My World Ambassador

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday that if she is elected president, she would make her husband a roaming ambassador to the world, using his skills to repair the nation's tattered image abroad.

"I can't think of a better cheerleader for America than Bill Clinton, can you?"
the Democratic senator from New York asked a crowd jammed into a junior high school gymnasium. "He has said he would do anything I asked him to do. I would put him to work."

Clinton spoke at a town hall-style meeting Saturday where she took questions from about 200 people. When asked what role the former president would play in her administration, she left no doubt it would be an important one.

"I'm very lucky that my husband has been so experienced in all of these areas," said Clinton, who pointed to the diplomatic assignments her husband has carried out since leaving office, such as raising money for tsunami victims.

Bill Clinton as First Gentleman?
Former President Bill Clinton on His Role as a Possible Presidential Spouse and His Life's Work

By KATE SNOW
July 31, 2007

Share Bill Clinton at tea parties and library openings? If he becomes the first first gentleman in the history of the nation, Clinton said he won't be adverse to performing some of the more traditional functions of the first spouse.

In an interview for "Nightline," Clinton told ABC News' Kate Snow, "I wouldn't mind actually doing some of that work -- some of the, you know, some of the more social work. If I were asked to do that, I would be happy to do it."

That is, as long as he could also continue the work he's doing with his multinational Clinton Foundation -- which includes global projects to combat HIV and AIDS, promote economic development and combat climate change and a well-regarded domestic effort to combat childhood obesity.

Bill Clinton 'looked into running for vice president under Hillary'
Last updated at 17:09pm on 31st August 2007

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told a talk show her husband, Bill, had "looked into" running as her vice president.

Appearing on the David Letterman show on Thursday, the talk-show host asked if Bill Clinton could serve as her vice president should she be elected to the White House.

But the former first lady acknowledged that he could not. "Believe me," she joked, "he looked into that."

WJC SAYS NO VP FOR HRC
Tue Sep 04 2007 19:03:13 ET

Bill Clinton ruled out running as HRC's VP tonight during a taping of the CBS's LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

MORE

Dave: “Now there was a discussion last week, and there is I guess a greater discussion, and there’s some confusion, and maybe I’m the only one confused about the eligibility of a man who has been elected twice as President to possibly be named later on the ticket as Vice President. Constitutionally speaking, can that happen?”
