Anyone take it? Experiences?

I started this month for general "female health" and hoping that it would help get my af back in order after my last miscarriage.

Haven't taken it quite long enough to find out if it will help. But I haven't had the insane 2-week PMS and massive bloating, so that's a plus. It seems to be helping with weight actually, but that may be because it pretty much clears me out daily.

I'm curious about others experiences, if they're similar, and if the benefits last more than just a few months.

I think it's wonderful!

After years of very irregular periods (anything up to 90 days), plus a probably oestogen imbalance/sensitivity, I started taking agnus castus (chasteberry), and 28 days later my period arrived. It continued to arrive within 26-30 for the next 4 years - at present it's more like every 36 days, but I'm peri-menopausal now. It also shortened my periods from 6-8 days to 3-4.

That's encouraging Manda. Thanks!

I kind of wanted to be sure I'm not just experiencing the placebo effect, yk? Coming from a medical family, alternative medicine is accepted sometimes but there's definitely some scepticism as well.

I'm curious, how does this help with spotting? It seems the past couple of months I've been spotting more and more. I don't have any pain and it's like for a week around ovulation and then the week leading up to my period. Rhys is still nursing, so I'm not sure if that stuff is ok to take during that. I've been thinking of seeing a doc for the spotting, but I know they are going to want to put me on bc pills and I don't want to go that route. I've tried drinking more rrl tea for a week now and today is the first day I haven't spotted. So I'm wondering....

I've never heard of this one. Does it help with extremely heavy periods?

It reportedly corrects female hormone imbalances.

http://www.homeherbs.co.uk/0/product/0/514-Agnus_castus.html

(it should not be taken if you're on hormonal contraceptives)

I have always had regular cycles, so didn't think it would do much for me. It hasn't helped me get pregnant, but it surprisingly seemed to help with my endo symptoms quite a bit. My periods became lighter and less painful while I was on it.

I could definitely use the 'lighter' bit. My periods aren't all that painful, just extremely heavy. On my heaviest day each month I have to change a super plus tampon every 30 to 45 minutes, plus I usually double up with a super tampon as well to help with the "gushing" if I can't make it to the bathroom on time.

ETA - forgot to ask, can you buy chasteberry over the counter in stores like Walgreens or Walmart? Or do I need to check out a health food store, order online, what? Don't know what I'm looking for in vitamin form exactly.

I was actually using fertilitea There are other ingredients in it too. I got it from amazon. It's a loose tea, but I also ordered a bunch of empty tea bags, so that made it easy. I only made it once a day and it helped tremendously.

I know exactly what you mean about the super heavy periods. No fun!

Does it say on the pack how much chasteberry you are actually getting from the tea, per cup or per so many cups?

I just checked and it does not. It is the first ingredient listed, but I don't know if it is listed in order like most products. I have used pregnancy tea at other times, which has many of the same ingredients (but not the vitex). It didn't affect my cycle at all, so I'm pretty confident that the vitex is what made the difference. It would be nice if the amount was listed - just says 3 cups a day, but as I said, one per day helped me tremendously.

*edited: i just wrote an email to the company to ask, so i'll let you know if they contact me

Humph, they did reply, but were not very helpful. This was the response:
Thanks for your note. Unfortunately we are not able to divulge the amount of Vitex in FertilAid or FertiliTea as it is a proprietary formula. We can assure you it was formulated by an MD and fertility specialist and contains the amount of Vitex deemed optimal to improve overall reproductive health. Hope that helps! Not much help...

Not much help at all!! That means you don't get to know how much of it you're taking in, compared to, say, what you'd be taking if you took it in tablet form.

Exactly. I know it has helped my periods, but I have no idea how it would work for someone who needs it to regulate their cycle.

So, I bought some Vitex and it says on there to not take it if you are pregnant or could be pregnant. So I guess I shouldn't start taking it until I'm 100% sure that this cycle is over?

You should probably wait, just to be safe.

Several of the women I know who've taken it said that they stopped taking it when they got a pos pregnancy test, but it didn't cause problems in that early week or two of pregnancy for them. However, it has definite hormonal action, so better safe than sorry.

Now that I did the whole month on it, I'm definitely going to continue. For the first time in a loooong time, I didn't feel like i was bleeding out during af. Still ended up bloating a little, but nothing like it was previously.

I was interested to see that even WebMD, which is not a bastion of alternative health products, noted that vitex has a measurable effect on the hormones (through the pituitary gland) and can be very helpful for women who have trouble with PMS and cycle-related problems. They did though warn against using it if you have endometriosis or estrogen-related cancers.

Endometriosis? Why is that? Does it make it grow more?

That was the suggestion of WebMD.

But googling natural health advocacy sites, they all pretty much say the opposite.

Here's one more naturally minded post that does say not to take it if you have endo. It also apparently can interfere with hormonal birth control.

As far as I am aware, it's fine to take chasteberry for endo so long as you're not on the Pill.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can always check with your doc.

My doc actually suggested it because my hormones are still all goofed up from pregnancy. I have a history of endo, but he saw nothing in there when I had my c-section.

I'll try it out after aunt flo arrives. Honestly I don't think it could hurt.

Any particular reason you want to wait till then to start it?

I don't think so either. Just wanted to be sure all the info was out there.

The bottle says to not use if you are pregnant and since we are not using hormonal BC right now, I'd rather wait to make sure I'm not pregnant before I start taking it.

Interesting...doing some reading now. I may consider this as recently I finished up a cycle with the worst round of mood-related PMS that I've had in years. A week plus of wanting to bite everyone's head off, justified or not.
There's one review on Amazon that says the person experienced suicidal thoughts/tendencies while taking it. Anyone else hear of that as a potential side effect?
