I think it's wonderful! After years of very irregular periods (anything up to 90 days), plus a probably oestogen imbalance/sensitivity, I started taking agnus castus (chasteberry), and 28 days later my period arrived. It continued to arrive within 26-30 for the next 4 years - at present it's more like every 36 days, but I'm peri-menopausal now. It also shortened my periods from 6-8 days to 3-4.

I'm curious, how does this help with spotting? It seems the past couple of months I've been spotting more and more. I don't have any pain and it's like for a week around ovulation and then the week leading up to my period. Rhys is still nursing, so I'm not sure if that stuff is ok to take during that. I've been thinking of seeing a doc for the spotting, but I know they are going to want to put me on bc pills and I don't want to go that route. I've tried drinking more rrl tea for a week now and today is the first day I haven't spotted. So I'm wondering....

I've never heard of this one. Does it help with extremely heavy periods?

It reportedly corrects female hormone imbalances. http://www.homeherbs.co.uk/0/product/0/514-Agnus_castus.html (it should not be taken if you're on hormonal contraceptives)

Does it say on the pack how much chasteberry you are actually getting from the tea, per cup or per so many cups?

Humph, they did reply, but were not very helpful. This was the response: Thanks for your note. Unfortunately we are not able to divulge the amount of Vitex in FertilAid or FertiliTea as it is a proprietary formula. We can assure you it was formulated by an MD and fertility specialist and contains the amount of Vitex deemed optimal to improve overall reproductive health. Hope that helps! Not much help...

Not much help at all!! That means you don't get to know how much of it you're taking in, compared to, say, what you'd be taking if you took it in tablet form.

So, I bought some Vitex and it says on there to not take it if you are pregnant or could be pregnant. So I guess I shouldn't start taking it until I'm 100% sure that this cycle is over?

You should probably wait, just to be safe. Several of the women I know who've taken it said that they stopped taking it when they got a pos pregnancy test, but it didn't cause problems in that early week or two of pregnancy for them. However, it has definite hormonal action, so better safe than sorry. Now that I did the whole month on it, I'm definitely going to continue. For the first time in a loooong time, I didn't feel like i was bleeding out during af. Still ended up bloating a little, but nothing like it was previously. I was interested to see that even WebMD, which is not a bastion of alternative health products, noted that vitex has a measurable effect on the hormones (through the pituitary gland) and can be very helpful for women who have trouble with PMS and cycle-related problems. They did though warn against using it if you have endometriosis or estrogen-related cancers.

Endometriosis? Why is that? Does it make it grow more?

As far as I am aware, it's fine to take chasteberry for endo so long as you're not on the Pill. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can always check with your doc.

My doc actually suggested it because my hormones are still all goofed up from pregnancy. I have a history of endo, but he saw nothing in there when I had my c-section. I'll try it out after aunt flo arrives. Honestly I don't think it could hurt.

The bottle says to not use if you are pregnant and since we are not using hormonal BC right now, I'd rather wait to make sure I'm not pregnant before I start taking it.

Interesting...doing some reading now. I may consider this as recently I finished up a cycle with the worst round of mood-related PMS that I've had in years. A week plus of wanting to bite everyone's head off, justified or not. There's one review on Amazon that says the person experienced suicidal thoughts/tendencies while taking it. Anyone else hear of that as a potential side effect?
