Is Obama a (or the) Messiah?
Is Obama the Messiah? People are asking these days and it's not so hard to understand why: the desperate throngs, the tears, the great awakening of a slumbering demographic. All that larger symbolism.
The emotional landscape of many American voters is calamitous of late -- frightened by our Babylonian war, unhappy with our President and depressed by the cleansing crush of the credit crunch -- so it's not surprising that the coming presidential election would take on a certain biblical coloring.
The Messiah question is a loud one coming from all corners. Even a blogger for Mother Jones, the hot heart of the far left, worries that the Obama-passion will be used for nefarious purposes by right-wingers, he himself writes "Barack Obama has a messiah complex and no one will convince me otherwise."
The salty 62-year old Chris Matthews of MSNBC puts the phenomenon of Obama on the good book scale, telling the NY Observer that "I’ve been following politics since I was about 5. I’ve never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament. This is surprising.”

I've never heard that before - any evidence?
Regardless of such - the fact of the matter here is that Farrakhan, a man full of hate and racism.. a man honored by Obama's pastor and church as a righteous man. How any self-professing Christian church and pastor can honor a racist and anti-Christian, anti-Jewish hate filled man is beyond me... and this man is declaring Obama to be the/a Messiah.
Is this what you want as President of the United States?

I don't think so. If you notice I haven't posted from right wing media. Even Mother Jones has a commentary on 0bama's Messiah Complex.

You can find the prepared version of last night's victory speech here, and you can video of his delivery here. Comparing the two reveals that Obama improvises quite a bit, and does so impressively. But what he improvises is some awfully heady, almost messianic, stuff.

A man is not dangerous without followers. It is the adoration of ones followers that permits evil to spread so easily that looking back everyone wonders how it could have happened.
What is so scary in the collection at http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/ is the obvious fact that people are ready to prostrate themselves before him to the point where they will force him to have to achieve their dreams at any cost.
Hitler was just a failed painter before he had the first adoring fan that worshipped him.
Mussolini was just a failed communist paper editor before he had a cadre of people that believed in him.
We know the Emperor of Japan as a skinny little man; but, the people's adoration of him as a God led to the ultimate atomic destruction of two Japanese cities.
Obama is just a junior senator without adoring fans. But, what will he become WITH all this messianic adoration??? History has provided us with the answer and it is not pretty.

oh now even I wont go THAT far.
first of all, black people will vote for him because he would be the first black president of the USA, that is just something even their ancestors would have wanted - no matter who is the black candidate. Actually if Obama wins, it would make history, period. And there are some white people who like Obama too.
Of course there are Jeremiah Wright and Farakkkan and Jesse Jackson and James Meeks - a lot of them are with Operation Push, who are just plain ol racist and they have jumped on Obama as their choice of leader, actually they dont care about the man himself as much, they just care that he is a black man, period.. They're gonna jump on anyone like that for that matter, always looking for an opportunity. Their thing is "black liberation politics".
Those artworks are produced by PEOPLE not Obama, wishin and hopin for a black president.
i have not seen Obama himself put up such an artwork. So since he did not do it, but his adoring fans, then we cannot blame Obama for a messiah complex.
That said, IF Obama himself told me to bow down and worship him, I'd flat out say NO SIR! I only bow to Jesus.
But has Obama requested that himself? Can you show me where he himself is saying that.. not just a bunch of heresy by Obama haters? Please show me.. and remember, videos can now be faked.. so even then i might take it with a grain of salt.

Images like this and this I find very disturbing. Not so much from a religious standpoint though. But for the fact that most dictatorships in the world share one common characteristic - giant posters of the "dear leader" plastered everywhere. Given that these are at campaign headquarters, it is hard to dismiss them as simply the work of fans.
Try this: do a Google image search on "Obama posters" and "McCain posters". For the former, you'll see many official campaign posters bearing Senator Obama's likeness. For the latter, not even one with Senator McCain's. (Warning: most of the hits on the latter are anti-McCain images, and some are highly offensive.)

Robb: I have seen a lot of these 0bama "great leader" murals and they severely disturb my spirit. Good job drawing the comparison between charismatic dictators of the past and 0bama, as well as pointing out the stark difference between the way the liberals treat their candidate (as savior, with ginormous portraits), and the more conservative treat theirs (as savior from 0bama, minus ginormous murals).

Agree with almost everything you said with the exception of this line:

Speaking as someone of color, it is something we would like to see, not only for someone who's black, but who's a latino/a or asian, but not all blacks will vote for him because he is so. Now there are those who will vote for Obama because he's the same skin tone as them (same goes for those who will vote for McCain), but that's a small percentage. Mnay are voting for him because of his platform and how it'll help them.
Other than that, I agree with you. Many extreme right wings are holding Palin to the same type of position, as their own messiah, yet I don't see a thread devoted to that denoucing it ...

I am more concerned that an openly liberal politician has a chance to be elected president. That...hasn't happened in a long long time.
If Obama was in line for the kingdom of the USA I would be worried. He is not. He could be president. Checks and balances and the ridiculous jealousies of his own party will keep the country from going liberal.

There was a longer video of the service. This was just part of it. Louis Farrakhan isn't exactly an 0bama hater. Mother Jones isn't a right wing magazine. The Washington Post isn't a Right Wing newspaper.

There was a longer video of the service. This was just part of it. Louis Farrakhan isn't exactly an 0bama hater. Mother Jones isn't a right wing magazine. The Washington Post isn't a Right Wing newspaper. There is a spiritual vacuum in this country. People are reacting to this unknown person like he's going to save them. This isn't the first time in history that this has happened.

His convention speech set had a bit of grandiose overtones to it so who knows.

His persona is as if he is already president. His walk, the way he presents himself when he gets off a plane,enters a crowd. He sets the tone. He oviously thinks he's the one, and feeds offt he mass of awe from the crowd.
