SeminoleTom -> Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:03:13 PM)

I know it doesn't matter what you wear--- God hears us if your wearing shorts or a three piece suit. However, we just started going to a new church wear 90% of the people wear jeans. I've tried wearing jeans---but it's just not for me. Anyone else with me? Or if you're fine with it lets hear it too. Again, it doesn't matter to me what everyone else wears--- I just feel like I need to wear slacks.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:12:56 PM)

Tom, if you don't feel good wearing jeans, just don't. Wear what you think is right, and if anyone thinks it is odd, just as them to show you the "thou shalt wear jeans to Sunday morning service" or, at least, a reasonable facsimile.

I don't attend services on Sunday, so I always stop at threads like this and ponder, "Shall I answer?" I always think I MUST explain. But anyway . . . .

I attend on Sabbaths, and I wear jeans. My nicer ones, though -- like the ones I sewed a bee on one thigh and two bees on the other turned-up cuff. And I wear other things with them that also have bees on ot -- a shirt, a sweater, a hat, and even shoes with a bee on the laves of one. Betcha can't tell I LOVE bees!

But anyway, I go dressed all right, although it is really rare that I ever dress up -- maybe once a year? [;)]

But my husband won't go to his church in jeans. He thinks that I probably shouldn't either. But I do, and he doesn't say anything. He doesn't go with me, or I probably wouldn't wear them.

Anyway . . . .

Consecrated2God -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:13:39 PM)

Yeah, I know what you mean--I know there's nothing wrong with it, and I still find myself dressing up more often than not.

pink.. -> Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:17:14 PM)

I wear jeans to church often. I pretty much wear whatever I grab out of my closet.

ta_mosquito -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:22:04 PM)

I think people in our church would look askance at me if I wore jeans. [&:]

However, when I went to a more casual church, I didn't wear blue jeans often - if I did, it was an evening service. If I wore jeans, they were black.

LivingParadox -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 9:27:11 PM)

I've attend both formal and less formal churches...I find the blue jeans only stick out if it's not the norm. (if you are asking if you are a better Christian for dressing up -- well, .... I don't think wearing blue jeans to church is a sin -- maybe a fashion faus pax, but not a sin [;)] )

sunshine4God -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 10:56:00 PM)

I have to wear either a dress or skirt every sunday or else I just feel weird about it. I have only worn jeans to church an handful of times really.

SuspenseWriter -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/18/2009 11:36:47 PM)

I was saved in the Jesus Movement of the early seventies (yeah, I'm an old hippie), so wearing jeans to church is second nature to me. On the other hand, my grandparents always wore their "Sunday best" to church. In the vast scheme of things we were both right.

singpeace -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 12:12:52 AM)

When I started going to my church, it was hard to feel comfortable in jeans when I was used to dressing up.

Now, I love it. It's easier to focus on what God is trying to tell us and show us when we don't have to worry about how we look on the outside.

Walker311 -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 12:24:00 AM)

Jeans are fine but the grown men wearing shorts to church are going to the bad place. The girlies exposing a large part of their shoulders and back along with their zits are going to the bad place too. I'm actually thinking about wearing one of those sleeping masks once I get to church so I will not judge and go to the bad place.

leftwing -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 7:37:46 AM)

What you wear is just a matter of what you are accustomed to. Maybe it matters to you that you fit in, maybe is doesn't.

Here is a angle for ya. A new pair of Levi Strauss heavy demin jeans costs about 75 bucks.
A new leather belt and buckle, 100. A pair of Tony Lama boots, 300. A new Stetson, 400.

Now, you'll look like a cowboy in his sunday best, but so what. You are decked out in 800-900 bucks worth of new duds.

Now look around you at the guy wearing an old polyester suit and a shirt that could stand a hot iron, wearing an old tie he obviously got for Christmas from his kids and a suit coat that doesn't quite match.. do you look down on him? Certainly not, I assume. He is in church. He's got on his sunday best too.

Lighten up. Be comfortable. Fit in if you want to, don't if you don't.

Me, I'll take the Levis, Tony Lamas and a new Stetson and go ANYWHERE and feel like a new penny, standing on its edge, shining like a dime!!![;)]

Our State Representative is a long-time member of the church that we attended over the summer. Before that, he was the mayor of our town. He almost always wears shorts to church in the summer--shorts and a T-shirt. Maybe he gets tired of dressing up during the week, I don't know! :)

This 'question'(and questioner)seems a way is to justify a guilty conscience or put the other congregates on notice. I won't play those little games.

This couldn't be further from the truth. Don't look for something that isn't there. I just wanted to know if anyone else feels uncomfortable wearing jeans at church. I don't care what anyone else wears. It definetly does not make one more or less 'saved' by what they wear to church.

godzgyrl05 -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 9:01:17 AM)

I'm on the Worship team, so I'm not comfortable wearing jeans on Sunday morning, (I'm a jean & T shirt gal), but it's okay in our church if I wanted to. However, I do wear dress slacks, usually black with a real cute top. [:)]

ames01 -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 10:00:29 AM)

When I first joined my current church, I felt a little funny about wearing jeans (since you rarely saw jeans in the churches I had belonged to in the past). For a while I kept dressing up, but as time has gone by I've switched to wearing jeans a lot of the time. It just took some getting used to. My church is very relaxed about that type of thing, though. I have had to come to church straight from work on occasion and haven't had time to change out of my scrubs (don't like doing that if I can help it, though). Nobody has said a word to me about it, other than they were glad I was there. [:)]

If you aren't comfortable wearing jeans, I don't see anything wrong with continuing to dress up a bit.

One thing to consider, though (and this is not directed at the OP or any specific individual, just food for thought). I was reading a book recently about ministering to the homeless. It made mention that if your church is going to minister to the homeless and the poor (including inviting them to your services), you may need to consider changing some of your collective behaviors in order to help make them feel more welcome and less like they are "different" from the rest of the congregation. One of the suggestions the authors made was to shift from the congregation and leadership dressing formally to dressing more casually. So, that may be something to think about if your church is already involved, or thinking about becoming involved, in ministry to the poor and/or homeless.

Katie51 -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 10:00:37 AM)

No. At our church you can wear your shorts and flip flops if you want to. no one cares, we are there to worship. When i think of my sweet mom putting on her girdle, hosiery, skirt, blouse, high heels that pinched her toes off...:o)...i'm really glad I can wear my jeans

m4maggie -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 10:44:04 AM)

I think it depends on how you were raised too.. When my mom, kids and I go to Church, my mom puts always puts on her sunday best while my girls and I are in clean comfortable clothes.. And if that means jeans, then so be it. What's funny is that my mother gives me a harder time about me wearing jeans than any congregation ever has.. LOL I pick her up and I always get that "hrmmm...." look !

This is a good point. We feed the homeless men from a local shelter every Sunday morning. We encourage them to stay for Sunday school and Worship service, but it's not a requirement. We also have clothes for them if needed, but the important thing is that we want them to feel comfortable in service regardless of what they're wearing. My pastor never dresses in a suit on Sunday morning, but he doesn't wear jeans either.

Elena1030 -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 10:49:07 AM)

I usually wear dressy casual -- sometimes the same sort of stuff I wear to work. Skirt and top; slacks and top. It's just what I'm used to doing.

When I'm going to be with the 2-year-olds during worship, I do wear jeans. (I'll be sitting on the floor most of the time. Why wear something that might get stained?) And yeah, for a long time, it's felt weird to wear jeans on a Sunday morning. (They were attire to be worn on Wednesday night... and maybe on Sunday night. But not on Sunday morning. That's just how I grew up. It's not a salvific issue, certainly!)

Sometimes I've worn jeans b/c I'm running late, can't find anything else to wear, and the congregation's not really gonna see what I wear during worship since I'll be wearing a long choir robe! [:D]

I don't think it matters what you wear... except as it matters to you, as part of preparing to worship.

We're a downtown church, and we have people from all different areas around our city and county. And sometimes people off the street come and worship. The attire can be quite a mixture. And I hope that a person's clothes will NEVER be something that keeps him/her from coming to worship at our church.

May we be known by our love and deeds, not our dress.

Eutychus -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 11:00:09 AM)

It's been a few years since I've worn a tie, much less a suit to church. However, I've never worn jeans to church. To me, jeans are work clothes. But I realize that is just personal baggage from my youth. So I have no problem whatsoever with anyone else wearing jeans to church.

When I first reconciled with my husband and children, I was moving here from FL where I had just recently been healed and saved in my hometown church. When I got here, the only thing I had was jeans, and just a few shirts, and I always felt really weird wearing them to church. Our church definitely has some people who wear jeans, but the vast majority really dress up in skirts/dresses and suits. It actually kept me from attending for a while because I felt so out of place.

Over time, I was able to find dressier pants, and now I have a decent "casual dress" wardrobe just for church. I still can't wear a skirt or dress because I have a very large tattoo covering most of my lower left leg. I would feel way more out of place wearing a skirt where people can see that tattoo than I do wearing pants or jeans.

I think it's just my own hangups, though.

Just to let you know, Tom, I understood your OP the moment I read it; I didn't see any game-playing or judgmentally in it at all. You were very specific in letting us know that you were simply curious what other people felt / thought regarding the topic.

Blessings,

I go to a homechurch with a core of 12 members; sometimes, we have less if people are out of town; sometimes, we have more.

Most of the people wear jeans. And now that I'm thinking about it, all 3 of the men who take turns teaching wear jeans (as do other men and other women).

I'm weird (which is not a new revelation, by the way).

I don't mind wearing black jeans to homechurch, but they must be new or fairly new black jeans.
I do, however, feel quite uncomfortable wearing blue jeans (whether new or not) to homechurch.

Mostly, I will wear a skirt & top or casual dress slacks & top to homechurch.

LOL!

Whether in a tux or in brand new cowboy duds, sharp-dressed men are quite eye-catching.

AMEN AMEN AMEN

I wear skirts and tops to Sunday morning services. My husband dresses up, often with a tie and jacket. But many at our church wear jeans, and we even have grown men who wear shorts.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 1:03:46 PM)

What I wear has nothing to do with what I was brought up to wear or what I was told I had to wear while in the church. There, I was expected to wear the best I had in my closet, and that was always dresses until I left the church. While in the church, we were not supposed to wear pants for any reason. Now, I wear either regular pants or jeans, never dresses or skirts. I don't even own a skirt or dress.

rcjames -> RE: Does anyone else feel strange wearing jeans to Sunday morning service? (10/19/2009 2:54:39 PM)

I wear jeans and cowboy boots to every Sunday morning service; and I do not feel strange, even though I am the pastor.

Thanks
RC
