. . . some shortly past and some still to come since many give on either Hanukkah or Christmas gifts. So what are you going to give Dad? Another sweater and tie set? One of those basically useless little men's trinkets sold at holiday time, like the miniature golf sets, the head massager, or the itty-bitty pool table? What about Mom? She told you last year that she has everything and she don't need any more stuff. She already has three pairs of slippers. What about that newly-wed relative who is still opening wedding gifts and wondering how to find time to return the extras? How about your child? Is it time for you child to learn that the holidays are not all about him or her? Well, have I got an idea for you! There are a kajillion stories around the nation and the world about how the bees are disappearing and nearly as many theories about their disappearance. And there are just as many stories of children and families starving to death for lack of food. Have you ever considered combining the two ideas and helping people end their hunger as well as giving them a paying vocation? Here's how you can solve all these problems! Check out http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.2668675/ . For $30, you can buy a family a beehive, and they can sell the honey, beeswax, and pollen in order to feed their families. The side benefit is that the bees will pollinate the local crops, often doubling some fruit and vegetable yields! This will help lift the hunger-burden from them and guarantee more food for others surrounding their communities, and the ripple-effect will be tremendous, reaching far! Your gift can help Heifer provide a family with a package of bees, the box and hive, plus training in beekeeping - and this unique gift will be passed on to another family in need. Wow! I love this! I am not a well-moneyed person, but I can at least do this! For only $20, you can give a family a flock of chicks, ducks, or geese -- see http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.204586/! For those who can give more, check out the possibilities at the same site. And may G-d bless us with His perfect gifts as we reach out to others, releasing our little or much into the families of those who have so much less.

I love this idea! Thank you for the links. I would much rather give to those in need than give more stuff to someone who already has too much stuff to begin with.

I gave in honor of my parents -- either last year for Christmas or this year for their anniversary. I forget which! To this organization: Sweet Sleep A non-profit Christian organization started by a friend of mine that sends mission teams of people to build beds for orphans and to train some of the older kids in how to build them. The program started with orphanages in Moldova and now has expanded to Uganda and to Haiti. Here's how Sweet Sleep began: Jen Gash's story

Yes, if people go to worldvision.org and then click ways to give, they have a gift catalog option. In the gift catalog you can find a gift to suit just about anyone on your gift list. For example, my little nephew loves to fish so I bought a gift that involves fish/fishing supplies for people. They have gift options of all kinds. It is fun to spend time selecting 'the perfect gift' or just give to area of greatest need and let them choose. We have found WorldVision to be a wonderful organization. And when they were evaluated a number of years ago, they spent a very small portion on administration fees and most of the money goes directly to those in need. \o/
