This poll is about finding out - if possible, the percentage of smokers/no-smokers here on our forum, and what their highest level of education is. I am running this, because of data that says that the prevalence of smoking is greater for those who don't have a college degree. I don't know about the rest of y'all .......... but I do know that it is true, in my neck of the woods - so this - "Should", be interesting! -charles

Truly embarrassing--I have a medical degree--gobs of education, out the wazoo--smoked for 40 years up until a week ago. Should have a PhD in denial. :) Lord, keep me free from this addiciton. I am still addicted, still wanting and missing the smoking, cuz it always gave me pleasure. Miss that menthol. Ok, gotta make it 2 more hours. Deep breath. Pray. Love to you all. God keep you.

Wow! 12 Non-Smokers/4 smokers so far! Does this forum reflect real-life, or what? 'Cause currently anywhere from 20-27 % of the pop. (Depending where u live) of the USofA Smokes/Chews. -charles

Bachelor's Degree/Non-Smoker -- tried smoking a few times back in college, but never became a smoker. I'm very thankful for that!

Degrees in Theology and History. When I was in High School it was very apropos to smoke, I mean the great great majority of folks smoked. It was the cool thing to do. So I tried, and quickly found out that I had severe tobacco smoke alergies. With the snot running down my upper lip, my eyes red and running, and coughing as though I had some really seriious disease it was not cool, nor advantageous for impressing the girls. I found out that I was not allergic to tobacco, I could chew and dip with no adverse effects. But alas even though we were really back in the sticks where I grew up, we were not far enough back in the woods for the girls to be impressed by someone with a chew in their mouth. So save for a couple of weeks of trying, I have been tobacco free for all my 68 years. Thanks RC

High school grad, smoked for 31 years, quit almost 10 years ago. Not sure where I fall in your poll so I didn't vote.

Never, ever tried it. Never, ever will. I have two good reasons: * My grandfather was a smoker and died at the age of 60 of a heart attack, which we think was primarily due to his history of smoking. * I'm allergic to second-hand smoke.

Hiya Elana! I like, no- make that - "LOVE", your reasons for not smoking! ;) Although, from my view point - I would've put allergic to smoke 1st, and then heart attack. mostly because there are a lot of variables for one having a heart attack; obesity, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease, eating more of a unhealthy diet than a healthy diet, lack of exercise, and so on and so forth. Yes - even smoking! For example; My dear father passed away @ the age of 79 from dementia with heart disease. Yet, up until the about very last year of his life - he was a smoker/chewer, since his teens. Now - it would be easy to blame his conditions/death on the smoking/chewing - however; my dad wasn't one to watch his diet, not going to the Doctor (they're nothing but money grabbers, dont cha know?), etc, etc. So then the question is (rhetorical only!) - Just exactly - "How Much", blame can be put on smoking for my dad's death? See my point? -charles

See my point? -charles Good points, Charles (which was, by the way, my grandfather's first name). I think I put the death of my grandfather first because it happened long, long before I discovered I was allergic. He died when I was almost 6, and most of my life, I wasn't around a lot of smoke. It was when I went karaoking in my mid 20s, in a very smokey bar, that I discovered that being surrounded by cigarette smoke for hours would induce an allergy attack that went into a sinus infection. Not fun!! But yeah, I agree -- his diet could have had something to do with it. He was part of that generation that ate lots of heavy, high-fat food. But why he died early and others his age didn't, who knows? I'm not sure that his death really was the full cause of my early mindset (since childhood) that I would never ever smoke, but I imagine it solidified it for me... and was reinforced by my mother's attitudes towards smoking. I'm so proud of the ones in this thread who have quit smoking or are in the process. I'm praying for you!!!

It is my understanding that regardless of other factors, smoking doesn't just add to but multiplies one's chance of early death or disability from heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, etc.

At the very least, nicotine narrows blood vessels, increases blood pressure, and cigarette smoke contains over 80 known carcinogens. That sound pretty direct to me.
